The Stock Exchange of Thailand recorded the highest share turnover velocity in Asean last year, reflecting the volatility of world stock markets and rapid movements of funds in and out of equities.
The SET Index peaked last year at 1,144.14 points, its highest in 15 years, and market capitalisation peaked at a record 9.36 trillion baht. Trading turnover per day averaged 29.47 billion baht, the second highest in region behind the Singapore Exchange.
Even though the SET Index contracted by 0.72% from the end of 2010, the decline was very modest compared with other markets in Asia such as Hong Kong (down 19.97%), Seoul (10.98%) and Singapore (17.04%), while other emerging markets declined by an average of 21%.
