Local sports car assembly rumour quashed
A juicy rumour that Toyota will build its all-new GT86 sports car at one of its Thai manufacturing plants has been rejected.
``It's just a rumour,'' said a company spokesperson. ``Demand would be too low [to justify local assembly]. It would be better if we could build Lexus cars locally in Thailand.''
Speculation about the GT86 assembly emerged after some independent importers were reportedly uninterested in selling the iconic, rear-wheel-drive coupe because they wouldn't be able to match the price of Toyota Motor Thailand. And some onlookers thought with prices starting at under 2 million baht for locally built cars, the GT86 be meet Toyota's ``affordable'' tag.
