IBM targets Thai expansion

IBM Thailand is spearheading sales growth in both local and regional markets by using Thailand as a springboard to Laos.

IBM Thailand will spend on marketing for the first time in 60 years, says Mrs Parnsiree.

The Thai unit of the US technology giant will spend money on marketing for the first time since its inception six decades ago, a move aimed at strengthening its brand for the mass market.

Parnsiree Amatayakul, managing director of IBM Thailand, said the company plans to set up four offices upcountry this year, in Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chon Buri and Hat Yai of Songkhla.

IBM will continue to promote its Smart City strategy for boosting the use of IT in cities.

"We aim to promote Thailand as a 'business analytic hub' in Asean," said Mrs Parnsiree, adding that the company is helping Chiang Mai with its Smart City roadmap, especially in the areas of agriculture and medicine.

IBM hopes to introduce the Smart City concept through the company's new offices in the four provinces, whose many industrial estates need disaster-warning centres and data backup facilities.

"We can earn more revenue from consulting services, which now make up half the total," Mrs Parnsiree said.

IBM expects revenue growth of 200-300% from the provincial offices this year, higher than overall growth.

The company also aims to promote Thailand as a hub for business analytics in Asean, setting up an innovation centre in the country. Plans call for cooperation with universities to add 10,000 experts to the field within three years.

In 2010, IBM's business analytic products and services grew 47%, providing strong evidence for the enterprise spending trend.

Mrs Parnsiree cited Thailand as a top 20 high-growth country.

Revenue from its 140 emerging markets are expected to make up 30% of worldwide revenue by 2015, up from 22% last year and 21% in 2010.
