Sales soar in flood revival

The Thai automobile market skyrocketed in October from the same month last year when the industry was badly hit by devastating floods.

Total vehicles sales jumped 233% to a record 142,839 units.

Sales of passenger cars last month also surged 264% to 72,211 units, while those of commercial vehicles soared 207% o 70,628 units including 61,391 pickup trucks, a 226% increase.

The government's first-time car buyer scheme and auto makers' return to full production capacity drove the market in October, said Vutigorn Suriyachantananont, a senior vice-president of Toyota Motor Thailand.

He said sales through October increased by 60.2% year on year to 1.14 million units. The industry forecasts overall sales of 1.4 million units by year-end.

Sales growth will continue this month thanks to accumulated booking orders and the ability of carmakers to deliver the cars to their customers, said Mr Vutigorn.

He said the expiry of the first-time car buyer programme by year-end will also expedite purchases.

Surapong Phaisitpattanapong, spokesman for the Federation of Thai Industries auto industry club, said total auto production in October hit a record 252,165 units, up by 410% year-on-year.

Vehicle production through October reached 1.98 million units, up 48%.

Exports of Thai-built vehicles increased by 79.7% to 98,284 units worth 47.1 billion baht. Year-to-date exports also surged 21% to 840,149 units worth 403 billion baht, said Mr Surapong.
