Thai rice 'has lowest arsenic'

Research by the University of California into fears and claims of arsenic in rice said Tuesday that the world famous Thai khao hom mali had the least amount of the naturally produced poison of any grain in the world.

The study, publicised online Tuesday in a press release, also failed to reach any conclusion about the dangers of arsenic in rice.

But for those who are worried, it appears that "jasmine rice from Thailand, had the least arsenic," along with basmatic strains imported into the US from India and Pakistan.

It is still amazing that Bangkok Post does not have an Ombudsman exclusively to scrutinize on important Scientific articles. Any sponsored ¨research¨ results coming out of North America with some University tag on it gets free and unchecked publication in most major newspapers and magazines around the world as if they own the final truth on the subject. It is really very irresponsible of any editing newsman to allow such badly reported article invade people´s life and thoughts.
At least before publishing it the paper should consult with various experts on the subject to understand and analyse the report and warn its readers of the inacura

While the University was at it,why didn't it check how many unnatural poisons and chemicals the rice contained.
Since they didn't,I wonder who paid for this study as it is usually people/corporations with vested interests and a desire for a specific result, mainly because they try to portray organic/eco rice as somewhat less safe than pesticided, hormoned, chemical fertilized and treated rice.
Without this information to compare with,I'd say it's a pretty worthless study. I find it very hard to believe.

If the natural arsenic in rice and fruit were harmful to humans, then there would be no one left in Asia, as those two food groups comprise a substantial portion of the everyday diet. Like many "scientific" studies, they look at a few examples over a couple of months, then announce their findings as the gospel truth. Long terms effects of substances take long term studies to truly understand.

people from the past century have been eating rice through out their life and here we are- there generations. What food is without of any substance that can pose a problem in our health. Any foods taken in excessive amount are not good for our health anyway.
