Thailand's cloud market reaches new heights

The adoption of cloud-based services continues its march in Thailand as businesses seek ways to survive in the current competitive environment and reduce costs, says global software company VMware.

The California-based cloud and virtualisation software firm said Thailand accounts for the second-largest share of revenue for VMware in Asean, after Singapore.

Global IT research firm IDC projects the cloud-based service market in Thailand to grow by 29% to US$30 million this year.

Chawapol Jariyawiroj, regional senior director and country manager of VMware for Thailand and Indochina, said in order to keep up with rapidly changing technology and intense competition, companies need to develop innovative businesses, products and services as well as efficiently manage information security.

Given these challenges, organisations need to constantly upgrade their IT infrastructure to deal with the increasingly dynamic business environment and overcome technology-led business disruption, especially from the cloud and mobility trends.

A crucial area that requires high-performance development is data centres, Mr Chawapol said. Operators of data centres in Thailand are increasingly transforming from traditional data centres to modern software-defined data storage facilities.

The software-defined data centre entails an IT infrastructure that extends virtualisation concepts. It is operated and managed through an application programming interface, so enterprises can be more flexible in responding to changing technologies and reduce costs.

Hybrid cloud technology is another important area to invest in as it enables businesses to become more flexible, competitive and effective.

Financial institutions, telecommunication companies, manufacturing firms and educational institutions are potential customers to adopt the hybrid cloud.

Mr Chawapol said that as Thailand is VMware's second-largest market in Asean, the local operating unit has been appointed as its operating centre to support regional business development and supply technological support to other emerging markets.

VMware reported record revenue of $6 billion in fiscal 2014.
