Consumer confidence falls further

Consumer confidence dropped for a fifth straight month in May, a university survey showed on Thursday, due to concerns over economic prospects at home and abroad, drought and low commodity prices.

The index, compiled by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, was at 72.6 in May compared to 72.7 in April.

Sentiment was hurt by uncertain economic prospects, as well as low commodity prices and drought, the university said.

It added consumption was likely to remain weak until July, the university said.

The economy grew 0.9% in January-March from a year earlier and 3.2% from a year earlier. The Bank of Thailand forecast economic growth of 3.1% this year, up from 2.8% last year.

Pivotal exports and domestic demand have remained sluggish at a time household debt levels are high.
