Passenger traffic through gateway Suvarnabhumi and five other big Thai airports showed robust growth in the first half of the year.

Passenger traffic grew in tandem with aircraft movements, which rose by 9.1% to 389,740 as the country's political stability and growing tourism industry fuelled traffic demand.

Cargo movements through AoT-operated airports, which were in the doldrums, also showed an increase in the first half with 3.9% growth to 689,734 tonnes.

Suvarnabhumi continued to hold the lion's share of overall passenger traffic with 28.39 million passengers, representing 46.5% of the total.

But it showed the lowest growth rate in passenger traffic among the six airports, at 6.2%, due to the airport's capacity squeeze rather than a lack of demand from airlines.

Bangkok's Don Mueang airport, billed as one of Southeast Asia's busiest hubs for low-cost carriers, registered the steepest growth in passenger traffic, up 20.9% to 17.45 million.

Also displaying strong growth was the congested Phuket airport with a 19.4% increase to 7.67 million passengers.

An 18.6% surge in passenger traffic was seen at Chiang Rai airport with 984,109 passengers.

Chiang Mai airport witnessed 14.4% growth in passenger traffic to 4.62 million.

Passenger traffic at Hat Yai airport was the other AoT site with single-digit growth at 6.6% to 1.93 million.

In terms of aircraft movements, Phuket registered the highest growth rate in the first half (17.4% to 48,345), followed by Don Mueang (10.2% to 119,289), Hat Yai (7.6% to 13,269), Suvarnabhumi (7.1% to 167,884), Chiang Mai (6.2% to 33,894) and Chiang Rai (5.1% to 7,059).

The majority of cargo movements passing through AoT-run airports took place at Suvarnabhumi. Thailand's main airport in Samut Prakan province dealt with 617,149 tonnes, up 1.6%, representing 89.5% of overall freight volume.
