Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 1.88%, but the non-food sector dropped by 0.59% in August.
August's annual core inflation, which strips out raw food and energy prices, was 0.79% higher than the same month in 2015.
The CPI over the eight month period was down 0.03% on the same period in 2015.
