BoI lines up European roadshows

The government plans to hold roadshows in France and Germany next month, aiming to attract more investment and technology transfers, says the Board of Investment (BoI).

Hirunya Suchinai, secretary-general of the BoI, said the roadshows would focus on major manufacturers such as automotive companies.

"The roadshows are set for Oct 4-8," she said. "They will be led by Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, and we seek to meet global companies to entice them to invest in Thailand."

During the roadshow in France, Mr Somkid and the Thai representatives are due to meet with Mouvement des Entreprises de France (MEDEF), which oversees and promotes French investors who want to expand abroad.

The MEDEF has 750,000 members, 90% of whom are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

"This will be a good opportunity to explain the government's Thailand 4.0 industry modernisation policy to French companies, as well as foster business matching and technology transfers to Thai SMEs to create new products and innovations," Mrs Hirunya said.

For the roadshow in Germany, the delegation will focus on using German SMEs as a model to increase the competitiveness of Thai SMEs.

"We are also due to visit the Darmstadt University of Technology, which has a famous research and development centre to support German SMEs," Mrs Hirunya said.

Germany is one of Thailand's biggest foreign investors, with investment totalling 16 billion baht over the last three years.

It is also Thailand's largest European trading partner, while more than 600 German companies currently do business in the country.

In 2015, Germany imported €5 billion (194.6 billion baht) in Thai goods, while Thailand imported €4.1 billion in German goods.

The German ambassador to Bangkok, Peter Pruegel, recently said that continued political differences and restrictions were not obstacles for Germany to continue its intensive engagement with Thailand across various fields.
