Covestro to keep focus on Asia-Pacific

Covestro, the world's leading supplier of polymer material, says it will continue to supply products for medical equipment and senior care sectors, keeping its focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

Chief executive Patrick Thomas said apart from these two sectors, which have continued to grow, Covestro also supplies polymers to several other industries including automotive, electronics, constructions and sports.

"In the first half of 2016, Covestro's sales volume increased by 8.1% to 242,000 tonnes, up from 224,000 tonnes in the same period of last year. As a result, the net income increase 54% annually to €412 million (15.7 billion baht)," he said.

Last year, Covestro reported sales revenue of €12.1 billion.

Mr Thomas said the Asia-Pacific region has strong growth potential.

Currently, Covestro has 28% of market share in Asia-Pacific, 44% in Europe, Middle East and Latin America, and 28% in North America.

Covestro has 30 production plants worldwide and employs 15,800 people. Its operations in Thailand are based in Map Ta Phut, producing high-quality polycarbonates and polycarbonate blends as well as speciality film at a total capacity of 300,000 tonnes a year.

"Covestro Thailand exported its products to more than 80 countries. Around 15% of total production is for Thai domestic consumption, while the remaining 85% is for export," he said.

Mr Thomas said the company has selected Thailand to be its Asean regional headquarters and plans to continue expanding its business in the region.

Besides Asean, the company also plans to expand in China, expecting to produce 400,000 tonnes a year, up from 300,000 tonnes at present.

He said demand in China remains strong with sales volume growth of 14% in the first half of this year, compared with the same period last year.
