GDP growth forecast unchanged at 3.3%

The Finance Ministry has kept its economic growth forecast for 2016 unchanged at 3.3%, as export performance has improved and government spending and tourism remain strong.

The figure released on Friday is within the ministry's forecast range of between 3.0% and 3.5%.

The economy is projected to expand by 3.4% next year, with a forecast range between 2.9% and 3.9%, Krisada Chinavicharana, head of the ministry's Fiscal Policy Office (FPO), told reporters. Economic growth last year was 2.8%.

The ministry now expects that exports, which account for almost 70% of gross domestic product, to contract in value by only 0.5% this year, following better than expected shipments in August and September. That would mark the fourth straight year of declines, but the forecast is better than the 1.9% decline the FPO predicted three months ago.

In 2017, exports are expected to increase 1.8%, it said.

Mr Krisada estimated that the economy expanded by 3.3% to 3.5% year-on-year in the third quarter. The National Economic and Social Development Board will release official figures for the quarter on Nov 21.

While consumption has slowed during the initial mourning period for King Bhumibol, the FPO chief said he expected to see a steady rise for the remainder of the year.

The Bank of Thailand has forecast GDP growth of 3.2% this year and next.

The central bank has left its policy interest rate unchanged at 1.5% since April last year, and the finance ministry has predicted the rate will stay unchanged throughout 2017.
