The Government Savings Bank has transferred a total of 2.88 billion baht to 1.28 million people who applied for welfare support under a new government programme.

GSB president Chartchai Payuhanaveechai said the state-run bank transferred 3,000 baht each to 112,780 farmers and 1,500 baht each to 161,017 other people for a total of 579.9 million baht on Saturday.

On Friday, the bank transferred 2.3 billion baht to 1.01 million people who are not in the farm sector. A total of 519,189 people received 3,000 baht each and another 493,834 received 1,500 baht each.

The government opened registration in July and August for Thai citizens aged over 18 years old and earning less than 100,000 baht a year.

The GSB found that around 800,000 of those who registered did not have accounts with the bank so it urged them to open one in order to receive the funds.

The other two state-owned banks -- the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives and Krungthai Bank -- also offered registration.

However, the qualifications of 1.3 million of the 8.27 million people who registered did not meet the requirements, a Finance Ministry official said.

In some cases, farmers had not registered with the relevant state agencies or lacked other documentation. They could still qualify if they can provide further evidence by Dec 15.
