Central Group will unveil its Platform Wongwianyai shopping mall on Christmas Day at the site that used to house Robinson Ladya Department Store in Thon Buri.

The group has invested 250 million baht to build the mall, which has more than 100 shops and restaurants, plus many tutoring schools.

Lertvit Pumipitak, Central's senior executive vice-president for business development, said Platform Wongwianyai will serve the needs of target customers who reside in Thon Buri and make the best of a densely populated location with more than 13,000 inhabitants per square kilometre.

Thon Buri is the fifth most densely populated district in Bangkok.

The land plot used to be Central Ladya Department Store, which was built 40 years ago and subsequently became Robinson Ladya Department Store in 1997.

The use of the word "platform" in the new name is derived from the train station platform, symbolising the venue as a meeting point and centre of communication for the people of Thon Buri.

Occupying 27,820 square metres, the project hosts more than 100 stores, including Tops Market, B2S, Fit by Supersports, Mr DIY, Starbucks, Bar-B-Q Plaza, Cafe Amazon, Watsons and Beauty Buffet.

The mall is home to at least 18 renowned tutoring schools, such as Pure Chem Center by Ajarn Ou, A Big Center, O-Plus, The Brain, Enconcept, Applied Physics and Ideal Physics -- all of which rank among Thailand's best.

The schools will benefit more than 30,000 youths living in nearby communities and their parents, who can shop while their children learn.

Platform Wongwianyai's structure emphasises large, clear glass panels as key building materials.

There will be parking for more than 300 cars and easy access to nearby Wong Wian Yai skytrain station, Klong San pier and public bus stops.

The shopping mall will be accessible from two future MRT routes -- Tao Poon-Rat Burana on the Purple Line and Hua Lamphong-Maha Chai on the Red Line.
