The number of start-ups rose 12% to 6,525 in June from May, led by construction businesses, according to the Business Development Department.
Director-general Banchongchit Angsusingh said on Monday compared to same month last year, the number of new businesses grew 10%.
Total registered capital in June was 40.9 billion baht, up 30% month-on-month and 130% year-on-year, largely thanks to capital-intensive businesses such as transport and logistics, as well as property development.
By type, construction led with 610 companies, followed by property development (354), ornaments retailing (198), restaurants and eateries (168) and transport and goods handling (142), she said.
The June figures brought the number of startups in the first half of this year to 35,942, up 12% year-on-year. Total registered capital during the period was 164.3 billion baht, up 30%.
“We’ve kept the growth projection for new businesses at 66,000 for all of 2017, considering the positive effects of infrastructure investment and stimulus measures targeting the grassroots economy,” she said.
The strong June performance was due to improved confidence among operators in the economic recovery, rebounding spending in the private sector and cash injections into the grassroots economy. These factors boosted household spending while tourism continued to expand, she said.
Also in June, the number of deregistered firms jumped 44% month-on-month and 11% year-on-year to 1,548. They represented total registered capital of 8.1 billion baht, down 23% on month and 20% on year.
The types of companies going out of business last month were led by lottery trade (164), construction (126), property (98), restaurants and eateries (38) and management consultancy (30).
During the first half of this year, the number of deregistered businesses fell 5% to 6,481, representing 31.5 billion baht in registered capital, down 52% from the same period last year.
