UN signs on to help develop EEC sector

The UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has signed a joint declaration with the Thai Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Office to lend support to the country to improve its industry, helping it move toward the Thailand 4.0 era.

Industry Minister Uttama Savanayana said the cooperation will allow the UNIDO to set up an office in Thailand to help transfer technology and know-how, improving and modernising Thai industry in order to promote sustainable growth.

UNIDO, an international organisation that promotes sustainable industry development in countries going through an economic transition, plans to set up one of its Investment and Technology Promotion Offices (ITPO) in Thailand.

"The ITPO is expected to be located in the EEC area. It will be the first such centre in Asean after offices in China, South Korea and Japan," said Mr Uttama.

The ITPO will focus on the Thai government's 10 targeted industries as well as its S-curve industries by focusing on those sectors with strong potential initially, such as robotics and automation, electric vehicles and electronic parts, he said.

Under the cooperation, the ITPO plans to help Thailand gain more efficiency and create added value.

UNIDO also wants to create a programme to support a budget for Thailand conducting more research and development to find higher technology to push forward Thai industries, particularly those in the EEC areas, to meet higher international standards, said Mr Uttama.

Kanit Sangsubhan, secretary-general of the EEC Office, said the cooperation would mean bringing in experts and specialists to Thailand in several industries to improve efficiency as well as increase competitiveness.

Li Yong, director-general of UNIDO, said the organisation would promote the EEC in terms of new technology and development that would make the corridor meet global standards, making it more appealing to foreign investors.
