Abhisit calls for clear stance on Cambodia

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has demanded that the government clarify its position after Phnom Penh said it was pleased to follow the 2001 memorandum of understanding, signed with the Thaksin Shinawatra administration, as a framework for talks on the overlapping Thai-Cambodian maritime border.

Mr Abhisit said on Friday the government must have a clear position and establish a formal framework for negotiations before bringing the issue before the parliament for consideration and turning it into a treaty.

The opposition last week questioned the merits of the MOU, saying the Thaksin government had signed the deal with Cambodia in haste after having been in office only a few months.

He said the government remained tight-lipped about its formal response to the Cambodian position.

Mr Abhisit's remarks lack credibilty because as he well knows, or should know, his Government's Thai-Cambodia relations policy was a dismal and costly failure. Maybe he is in denial over the matter.

Shadow PM AV need to come clean on the secret talk issue confessed by Hun Sen. He needs to be reminded that 2001 MOU was not created by Thaksin or TRT. Chuan's administration would have signed the MOU with Cambodia if it was still the government. TRT followed up what was already there from previous administration. I am sure AV would scream if TRT did not follow it up. We all know who are the peoples related to Democrats wanted to make business deals if DEM is in power.

The corrupt business deals between the two "eternal friends", a Khmer Rouge commander and a fugitive, are well known. They are both experts in robbing their people blind.

Most people are, rightly, more interested in who can solve the problems with Cambodia than rehashing the decades of failures that caused them. Much as I admire ex-Prime Minister Arbhisit's personal qualities, he was never going to be able to do more than watch helplessly as things got worse. I do not expect great things of PT but they have a much better chance of reaching a negotiated settlement than any other government would have.

No Ladies and Gentlemen, if I recall correctly this problem was all started by the incompetent former foreign minister Khun Noppadol of the Thaksin government, and later escalated by Khun Chavalit on behalf of his boss - TS against the AV government. Let's keep these things in the proper perspective.

It's time for Abhisit to keep his mouth shut.

Ex-Prime minister Arbhisit is a handsome man with lovely face (I'm not gay), but why he's so into negative aspect? To restore his party reputation from badly defeated, Arbhisit should change his political views. Why keep whinning about those 4.6 sqkm? How many millions has he already spent to defend that land which isn't belong to him/Thailand? Is that land purely gold or piece of junk? Minipulating the reality agenda would ruin your national interests instead of gaining from it.

I suggest PM Arbhisit should ease his personal tension with Cambodia and move on with better relationship so that people who live on both sides of the border will have better lives.

For the past two and a half years, AV the ex.PM had turned the Thai-Cambodian relationship from peaceful to turmoil situation. The DEMs including AV should realize that PT-led government's stance with Cambodia is peaceful talks not quarrels.

It's odd how this is such an issue: most Thais tell me that they are perfectly happy
with the way it was, i.e. the entrance is at the Thai border and the temple on Cambodian soil
AND belonging to Cambodia. The Thais collect entrance fee, happily of course.
They also tell me they don't understand why the Thai government is making a problem of it.
They accept, no even agree that the temple belongs to Cambodia.
Well, that's what I hear.....or maybe it's just a coincidence that I speak to the people
    that have this opinion.

It sounds as if out prime minister is articulating the long on-going problems with Cambodia in an intelligent manner demonstrating skills of true professionalism. Thailand may indeed finally be lucky in having chosen such a person as prime minister.
