Govt reins in prices of flood-related products

The government has announced recommended prices for flood-related products to prevent hoarding and profiteering, Deputy Commerce Minister Phum Saraphol said on Monday.

"After the Commerce Ministry added flood-related products to its price-control list, the Department of Internal Trade hasa set recommended prices for them....to prevent people from hoarding," Mr Phum said.

He said the suggested price for of a 600cc bottle of drinking water was no more than seven baht, a 750cc bottle no more than nine baht and 1.5 litres no more than 14 baht.

Where do these people live? The shelves and warehouses are empty in many cities upcountry, because no transport possible or no production. No one follows Deputy Commerce Minister Saraphols recommended price structure. Only talking, talking and talking but no action. People become increasingly angry, everywhere.

Good to try and get these profiteers but whose going to enforce these prices??

When the people are at their lowest you can always find someone to push them down lower.

Is this called Thais helping Thais??

In market economy is difficult to price control over a wide area. The best method to keep prices down during emergency is to flood the shops and supermarket with cheap priced government released stocks. Some countries have government distribution network so it can set the prices that other sellers will have to follow or risk losing customers. As customers will be given wider choices, prices will remain stable as no manufacturer would want to rise prices for fearing losing market share.

These laws will be policed the same as all other laws, BIB taking money from store holders taking money from poor people. In order to enforce the law you need a law enforcement agency that is not only interested in extortion....cannot see that agency here in Thailand.
