Online lottery 'this year'

Government Lottery Office (GLO) officials have been instructed to step up preparations for the online lottery to begin sales by the end of this year, GLO director Atthakrit Thareechat said on Monday.

Pol Maj-Gen Atthakrit said this was in line with Deputy Finance Minister Tanusak Lek-thai's policy.

The online lottery, which would sell two- and three-digit numbers, was earlier expected to be revived and begin operation in six to eight months from now.

The existing system is badly broken so on the surface this looks like a good idea. However, lotteries are always effectively a tax on the poor because, in their desperation, they spend a disproportional part of their income on the lottery.

The 2 & 3 number game is the realm of the "invisible" operator. Their market for the most part don't have internet access. The invisible operators will find the on line system a positive as they can lay off bets that aggregate around one number set. Currently they do this with each other, just like bookmakers. So instead of the offset being funded from the external pool, losses will now be covered by the government tax payers. Its a great idea.

agree in thailand the money wont go to a good cause, maybe fake bomb detectors, submarines whatever, there is still around a million pound stirling missing from tsunami charity raised, straight into the pockets of the elite/mafia etc...

mojo discussion #4. I think you may got it all wrong by saying it will take away the livelihood of thousands of blind vendors. I thought the online machine will only sell 2 and 3 digits ticket and not the whole lottery ticket(6 digits).

Correct me if I am incorrect.

Gambling is illegal in thailand so i wont be buying any tickets in the near future!!!(said with tongue in cheek)

robingrant D3: nothing against the british experience, but look at the governmental mess here. It is copied from the british way of democracy. Unfortunately not everything that works in the west also works in the east. I'm sure the money will be used for good things - remins to see who defines 'good' and good for whom?

This is an excellent ID. The money keeps getting out of the pocket of poor people but to land into the pockets of some mafia. At least the money will go to the government. Of course most will go into the pockets of some corrupt politician or government employee but at least some part might be used properly.

This will not "take away the livelihood of thousands of blind and disabled people who now sell tickets on the streets" as mojo is pretending, since it is a different type of lottery but it will certainly take away the livelihood of thousands of mafia members or at least reduce it!

Never let it be said that Taksin forgets his friends.

Its a great idea. perhaps I will be able to sit and eat dinner out without every vendor coming to my table, trying to sell their tickets at inflated prices. Second more money will become available for good causes, that could be published every month, in the paper and on the TV.
