Alcohol, tobacco taxes up

The cabinet on Tuesday approved the Finance Ministry's proposal to raise the excise tax on liquor and tobacco, meaning an immediate increase in the retail price of liquor and cigarettes, but not beer or wine.

The excise tax hike is effective immediately.

    First the grassroots got promises, then they didn't get any more money from the rice-corruption-program and now they even have to pay more for lao khao to drown their sorrows.

    Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong said an increase in the sin tax will boost government revenue and help deter people from drinking and smoking.

    Well - you can’t have both. But nice try at playing the ‘public health and safety’ card. It’s almost like you care.

    Obviously this tax hike will not effect those members of society who receive bottles of JW Black or X.O. brandy as ‘gifts’ on an almost daily, if not hourly, basis. Not exactly sure who I’m thinking of here, but it’ll come to me.

    The taxes will pay for the bungling this governments has made of needless over borrowing to finance a flood scheme that is no where near ready but we are paying for now. Congratulations well done.
