IMF: Women could save Japan

Women could rescue Japan's chronically underperforming economy if more of them went to work, the female director of the International Monetary Fund said Saturday.

IMF managing director Christine Lagarde chats with World Bank president Jim Yong Kim during a press conference in Tokyo on Saturday.

Christine Lagarde said Japan's shrinking and greying workforce, which has left the country struggling to pay welfare bills, could really benefit from an injection of female talent.

Japan has multiple inherent issues to resolve other than adding more females into the work force. High YEN exchange rate, high operating costs, high costs of living, fierce competitions for tertiary education, a reluctance to import more foreign workers and very restrictive regulation / entries for foreign goods and services; government bonds are mostly restricted to the local market. Politically, their PM changes almost every 2 years to effect any meaningful economic / social reforms needed. Japan is still a very male dominated society and it will require many more decades to reach the mind set of their western counterparts in terms of a truly female emancipation.
