FTI chief cancels meeting to oust him

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) chairman on Sunday made a last-ditch bid to prevent moves to oust him, ordering members to suspend a meeting on Monday.

FTI chairman Payungsak Chartsutthipol on Saturday submitted a letter to FTI members saying that the committee meeting originally scheduled for Monday will be called off due to concerns that severe disagreements will arise.

"Those that are going to hold a meeting might be doing so according to their rights, but we [the FTI] have declared that there will be no meeting," said Mr Payungsak.

FTI members are due to call a general meeting on Monday, in which a proposal to vote him out of the chairmanship is expected to be high on the agenda.

Some FTI members, particularly those from labour-intensive sectors, recently vowed to press ahead to remove Mr Payungsak from the chairmanship of Thailand's largest private sector organisation.

Some members accuse Mr Payungsak of not being active enough in pressing the government to delay its plan to raise the daily minimum wage to 300 baht nationwide on Jan 1.

FTI secretary-general Sommat Khunset said Mr Payungsak's moves are against the FTI's regulations, as a decision to cancel or postpone a meeting is up to the committee members.

Moreover, Mr Payungsak stated in the letter that the postponement is also due to the anti-government rally that was held on Saturday, but now the rally is over.

Mr Sommat said a meeting can be held if half of the 348 committee members attend, and any subject can be addressed or voted on if it is proposed by more than half of the members attending the meeting.
