6% pay rise projection for Thailand

The average salary increase in Thailand in 2013 is projected at 6%, slightly higher than the 5.7% pay rise in 2012, putting the country in the middle spectrum in the Asia-Pacific region, where predictions range from 2.3% to 12.0% - a slight increase from 2012.

A 6% payrise is alarming news. But no Thai policymaker will dare say what every economist knows: A country with an 80% export economy in a world of collapsing consumer demand should not be raising wages. Make no mistake, Thailand is in very serious economic trouble with cheaper labor soon available all over ASEAN, and thousands of corporations waiting for the AEC to allow them to leave. Rising wages "feel" good and so people perceive the economy to be doing well. But higher prices of labor are another way of saying decreased competitiveness. Unemployment will soon spike and the credit bubble will collapse. Spain and Greece, here we come.

Pay rise for who? This article never identifies who is targeted for a pay raise.
