Intel has become the latest large American corporation to enter Myanmar following the easing of US sanctions.
The semiconductor manufacturer’s microprocessors and hard drives will now reach the former pariah state through a distribution agreement with US marketing group Ingram Micro Inc and its local agent KMD, announced on Thursday in Yangon.
For decades Intel’s products only reached Myanmar by unofficial means, according to the Wall Street Journal, meaning that both public and private sector institutions have failed to modernise their IT infrastructure.
Intel also said it would explore the possibility of running a training programme for Myanmar teachers to set up and operate PCs in their schools and improve digital literacy.
A spokesman for the chip maker added it has no plans yet to establish a permanent presence in Myanmar but would focus on building business through its external distribution agents.
