Inflation hits 13-month high

Thailand's inflation rate accelerated to a 13-month high in December, exceeding economists' expectations, as state subsidies failed to counter rising food prices.

The consumer price index was up 3.63% last month from December 2011, the Commerce Ministry said on Wednesday - a 13-month high, Bloomberg reported. This compared with a 2.74% increase reported in November. The median estimate of 12 economists according to a Bloomberg financial news survey was 3.22%.

The Baht 300 baht daily minimum wage nationwide policy, effective 1 Jan, will have only a minimal impact on inflation - like plus 0.1%, so says Watcharee Wimuktayon. So there must be many companies cashing in on this negligible change in the economy. Example, the price of a security guard for a condo is about 60% more than a year ago. Thailand needs a vocal BS-proof consumer watchdog that hunts down the truth with a fearless vengence.

Can anyone explain why food prices have risen so much.
