Grilled rat sellers earn millions (pix)

Grilled rats have become a local hit in Phitsanulok province and a couple has reportedly earned over a million baht a year selling them.

Somboon Yooyen, 50, and her boyfriend Somsak Tiwong run a grilled rodent stall on Sukhothai-Phitsanulok road near tambon Phai Kho Don.

"I am proud of selling grilled rats and I earn roughly 2,000 to 3,000 baht each day, sometimes 10,000 baht a day during festivals. This occupation provides me with enough cash to buy a truck and a house in only a couple of years,” said Ms Somboon.

The rat should be spiced or marinated is some sauces before grill so it taste better.

Hmmmm. She doesn't say whether she eats them. Disease-free? Who knows. Nobody checks.

I suppose if she sells 2000-3000 baht per day, that is at least 60,000 baht per month. Her profit should be at least half. I hope she is paying her taxes to support the Rice Scheme and First Car Scheme, what a great contribution.

Good to see businesses taking risks and doing well.

Unlike beef, this meat is free of hormones, antibiotics and other harmful substances. The commenters here showing concern for the quality of the meat clearly have no idea what they've been eating at restaurants.

    This is probably far healthier.

I believe that they are probably selling "Field Rats" and not sewer rats. I have eaten field rats several times when visiting villages in Phrae (close to Phitsanulok". Villagers get up very early in the morning and go hunting for field rats in the rice paddies. Did I like the flavor? Absolutely not !

most of their costumers are locals and they purchase 3-5kg, ... these rats most be delicious, I supposed. I can't imagine eating them anyway knowing that rats eat everything in the bin. What could be in rats meat that non in other meat like beef, pork, chicken etc.//
