Newin to build F1 racetrack

Politician-turned-football club owner Newin Chidchob plans to construct a Formula One racetrack worth about two billion baht in his hometown Buri Ram, Thai Rath reported on Thursday.

The president of Buriram United, dubbed ‘Thunder castle’, has contacted Hermann Tilke, the founder of Tilke Engineers & Architects that has built dozens of racetracks worldwide and renovated several others, to discuss the planned construction, Thai Rath reported, quoting a source at the club.

The source said Mr Newin, besides being a football lover, was also a big fan of motor sports and he wanted Thailand to have an international-standard racetrack certified by the global motor racing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), that could be used for staging Formula One -- the top class of world motor car racing.

Good luck to him, I for one would like to see F1 happen in Thailand however, how will all the fans get there and where will they stay?

Up to international standards? I seriously doubt it. F1 has the highest standards of any racing and even if he could complete it, he would face the task of getting F1 to drop another track to use his.

And how many F1 races will run on this Buriram track? And just in case there is a big race are there also lots of 5 stars hotels around that racetrack where all the participants and visitors can sleep? I am no F1 and no Buriram expert but somehow this idea sounds a little funny to me.

There is clearly no interest in F1 in Thailand if there was it would be shown on Thai TV. The TV companies do not see it worth while to invest in it.All hot air and a man trying to be above his station. It needs a lot more then 2 billion to interest Mr Ecclestone he also wants a guarantee of payments to FI for the privilege.
