Corruption, investment 'different'

While the government must ensure corruption-free bidding for the 2-trillion-baht infrastructure schemes, the public should not let their fears of graft disrupt investments that are key to driving the economy, Transport Minister Chatchart Sithipan said.

Chatchart: Country must come first

Corruption and infrastructure investments are two different issues that the public should not relate to each other.

I know of a UK firm walking away from a project here involving safety because of the reality that the "investment required for the social club donation" was half the budget and required up front. The UK firm was bound by anti corruption laws which it's management also supported whereas the competitors from a big country close to Thailand were not bound by any law other than greed.

Despite silly polls, find me one Thai that likes corruption. You cannot.

Maybe the infrastructure project will be the tipping point, the time when Thais say enough. All it is going to take is a 3% basis point interest rise to stop the Government in its trac

"People should not be afraid of corruption to the extent that nothing can be done [in terms of investment]. If so, the country will not be able to move on. [The public] needs to consider the necessity for the country," he told the annual meeting of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) yesterday.
