IEAT: 5 industries to drive future

Renewable energy, medical, bioplastic, aviation and creative industries will drive Thailand into the next decade, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) said on Wednesday.

Witoon Simachokedee, the IEAT chairman and permanent secretary for industry, said he expected the five industries to lift Thailand's industrial value beyond the three trillion baht mark by 2024.

Thailand's industries are currently valued at 2.7 trillion baht.

The creative industry includes film production, advertising, broadcasting and fashion. This sector, and  aviation,  are increasingly important with strong demand in global and regional markets, to be exploited when Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries become a single economic community in late 2015, he said.

Mr Witoon cautioned that the country could not afford to neglect its current main industries - rubber, food, petrochemical, automobile, electronic, and ethanol and biodiesel.

He saiod the country needed to add more value to agricultural products and maintain standards in the service industry to boost people's income.

The IEAT oversees 46 industrial parks in 14 provinces across the country, with factories at all levels. Their 4,000 large factories employ 500,000 workers.
