US business school offers hands-on master's degree

Bangkok University has joined with Massachusetts-based Babson College to launch Thailand's first graduate programme in entrepreneurship, beginning next January.

Bangkok University’s joint programme will closely match Babson’s, says Ms Healey.

Bangkok University is set to expand the School of Entrepreneurship and Management with the Master of Management in Entrepreneurship (MME) through the partnership with Babson.

US News & World Report ranks Babson College No.1 for entrepreneurship education.

The MME will be a one-year programme with one semester at Babson College. The initial intake will be 30-40 students who want to understand how to be an entrepreneur but lack the skills or experience.

"We worked closely with Bangkok University to form the curriculum of this programme. The information and value of the degree delivered by Bangkok University will be similar to that of Babson," Kerry Healey, the president of Babson College, said during a visit to Bangkok.

Unlike other programmes, Babson's partnership with Bangkok University will stress hands-on learning, with students starting their own businesses.

The one-year graduate programme has already begun the initial admissions process for interested individuals and will cost 1.2 million baht, covering course credit, travel and accommodation at Babson College.

In the programme, students will be assigned a mentor or adviser, most of whom will be from industries, and if their business succeeds they can continue it.

Should the business fail during the programme, that will also be part of the learning experience of how to adapt and embrace changes in the business plan.

There will be no restriction placed on what kind of business students can start.

Graduates of the programme will gain access to the Babson alumni network as well as that of Bangkok University.
