Firms urged to boost corporate identity

Dun & Bradstreet (Thailand) is promoting the Universal Corporate Identity (UCI) system among local exporters and traders to enhance their credibility with trading partners.

The commercial information and insight database firm is in talks with the Commerce Ministry about the issue.

Yves Becher, D&B Thailand's country manager, urges the 36,000 local exporters to use the UCI system ahead of the launch of the Asean Economic Community in late 2015.

D&B provides a data universal numbering system (DUNS) number, a unique nine-digit ID referring to a single business entity.

"This is like a national ID or an official registration number for a company, serving as an index to locate business entities," said Mr Becher.

The number helps to verify business identity and track a company's history.

Developed by the New Jersey parent D&B Inc, 225 million businesses worldwide now use a DUNS number.

Mr Becher admitted the numbers are still in their infancy in Asean despite being commonly used in the US, Europe and Australia.

One thousand of Thailand's 1 million companies or 0.1% have applied for a DUNS number, for which they pay an annual fee of 7,200 baht, said Mr Becher.

D&B Thailand expects its customer numbers to increase by 25% per year, outpacing 8-12% for the overall industry.
