Solar panel deadline extended by month

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) will extend for one month to Nov 15 the application period to receive requests for residential solar rooftop panels.

ERC chairman Direk Lavansiri said requests from households only amounted to six megawatts so far, much lower than its target of 100 MW. The application period opened on Sept 23.

The regulator expects higher demand from the residential sector as its call centre 1204 was overwhelmed with calls asking about details of the programme, he said.

"Because this programme is new, it will take more time to reach our audience," said Mr Direk.

The ERC plans to join hands with the Federation of Thai Industries and commercial banks to promote the solar rooftop programme through workshops and seminars.

A solar rooftop requires an investment of 60,000 baht per set for a capacity of 1,000 watts, which will generate 1,300 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

Each household will be able to sell the electricity to state utilities for an average of 9,000 baht a year.
