Thailand, Vietnam pledge trade boost

Thailand and Vietnam plan to almost double their trade to US$15 billion (487 billion baht) in the next six years, a Thai diplomat said.

Bangkok and Hanoi have mutually agreed to target two-way trade to rise to $15 billion by 2020 from $9.4 billion last year, the Vietnam News on Monday quoted Panpimon Suwannapongse, the Thai consul general in Ho Chi Minh City.

Trade between the two countries last year increased 3.6% from 2012.

"Despite the challenging circumstances during the past few years due to the international economic crisis, the economic ties between Vietnam and Thailand have been robust," she said.

Major Thai exports to Vietnam include plastics, petrol, chemicals, automobiles, steel and machines. Vietnam exports household appliances, steel products, electronics, motorcycles, equipment and frozen seafood to Thailand.
