Thailand, M'sia focus on border trade

Thailand and Malaysia will boost trade and investment along their border in an attempt to foster ties amid the political turmoil in the kingdom.

More meetings between Malaysian business groups and their Thai counterparts will be arranged with plans to increase trade and investment between the southern border provinces of Thailand and eastern Malaysian states, the Bernama news agency on Wednesday quoted Fary Akmal, the economic affairs advisor to the Malaysian embassy in Thailand as saying.

He revealed the move at a meeting of the Malaysia-Thailand Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday in Bangkok.

The embassy and the trade body hold regular meetings to address the impact of the political unrest in Thailand on economic ties between the two countries.

Perlis, Perak, Kedah and Kelantan are the Malaysian states bordering Satun, Songkhla, Yala and Narathiwat in Thailand.

The Sadao checkpoint in Songkhla's Sadao district is the main trade outlet between the two countries.
