Directors' pool boost eyed

The Finance Ministry plans to increase the list of qualified candidates for directorships on the boards of 56 state agencies to 700, says a senior official.

Deputy finance permanent secretary Chakkrit Parapuntakul said the ministry's directors' pool had 560 names at the moment.

Candidates for directorships at all state enterprises must be selected from this pool, he said.

The Finance Ministry also needs to add new names because those who are not selected as directors will be removed from the list after five years, said Mr Chakkrit.

He said to qualify, individuals must display qualities such as honesty and integrity, transparency and self-sacrifice.

Moreover, they must not belong to any political party and must be less than 65 years old.

Of the 560 persons now in the directors' pool, 300 have already become state enterprise directors.

Each person can serve on no more than three state agency boards.

Since the army took over administrative power from the caretaker Pheu Thai Party-led government on May 22, a number of state agency directors have resigned to pave the way for the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to shake up the boards.

The junta's recent order scrapping Thai Airways International board members' free flight benefits has prompted expectations that board perks at other state enterprises, particularly those in dire financial straits, will also be cut and big changes in board compositions made.

The NCPO recently set up a 17-member State Enterprise Policy Commission or superboard to supervise operations and improve efficiency at state agencies.

Reduction of board members' benefits and changes in board compositions are expected soon.
