The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) plans to team up with the National Housing Authority (NHA) to develop mixed-use projects for retirees on its land near Bang Ping station in Samut Prakan.
Somprasong Suttayamully, acting director of the MRTA's Land Development and Management Department, said the transit authority would present the development plan during a meeting this week.
The partnership will involve residential development projects with a medical centre, hospital or clinic, and other facilities for senior citizens near a mass transit station.
"The existing mass transit stations are surrounded by residential projects for everyone except retired people," he said.
"We'll apply the same idea of the Sawangkanives project."
Sawangkanives is a condo project for senior citizens developed by the Thai Red Cross. Located on Sukhumvit Road in tambon Bang Pu, the eight-storey condo was designed to be elderly-friendly, with medical centres to support them.
Early this year the MRTA board gave the nod to the NHA to develop residential projects on two plots of MRTA land. The NHA proposed a mixed-use project entailing residential, commercial and office space.
"We don't think office space is needed. A mixed-use project should be residential and commercial or retail space," Mr Somprasong said.
The first residential project for retirees under the cooperation between the MRTA and the NHA will be located on 18 rai at the Green Line's park and ride building at Bang Ping station.
"We'll try to screen and offer only to retirees and prevent subleasing," he said.
The number, size and price of units have yet to be set, but they will be sold under a 30-year lease.
Both agencies will develop another mixed-use project on a 14-rai site at the terminus of the Purple Line at Khlong Bang Phai in Nonthaburi's Bang Yai district.
Mr Somprasong said the residential project on this site would be developed for those affected by land expropriation for Purple Line construction.
The idea of developing land the MRTA uses for stations or other purposes will be applied to future projects along the 10 new lines the National Council of Peace and Order recently approved, he said.
