Bangkok Fashion Avenue introduces Asian style hub

The Industrial Promotion Department and Post International Media Co have jointly launched Bangkok Fashion Avenue 2014.

Department secretary-general Atchaka Sibunruang said the Industry Ministry had set fashion as one of the main industries to promote.

Moreover, it plans to promote Bangkok as a fashion hub in Asia, making Thailand a fashion shopping paradise besides boasting beautiful natural attractions, creating a diversity of tourism products and attractions.

"We want Thai fashion products to become a must-buy souvenir for tourists, like when they visit Tokyo, Shanghai and Singapore," Ms Atchaka said.

She said textiles and clothing faced fierce competition due to price wars among manufacturers, particularly from China. Integrating creativity, innovation and marketing was thus a sustainable way to survive.

The partnership is aimed at enhancing the local fashion industry, which wants to create awareness that Thai fashion is now modern and unique and accelerate sales among domestic and foreign buyers, Ms Atchaka said.

In the first five months of this year, the fashion industry grew by 18% with sales of US$48.4 billion.

"We hope the Bangkok Fashion Avenue campaign will help the Thai fashion industry to reach more domestic and international customers," said Ms Atchaka.

International markets such as Asean, the US, EU and Hong Kong are also important revenue contributors for Thai fashion brands.

Supakorn Vejjajiva, chief executive of Post International Media, a unit of Post Publishing Plc, said Bangkok Fashion Avenue would run under the theme of "Everywhere Is Fashion" at five important fashion venues in Bangkok — Siam Square, Chatuchak Market, Pratunam, Bang Lamphu and Sukhumvit Road — from Sept 6 to Nov 16.
