Lenovo earmarks $5m to ramp up Thai operation

Lenovo Group, the world's largest computer maker, has allocated an extra US$5 million this year in its latest attempt to boost its presence in Thailand.

Thailand is one of two strategic Asean members for the Beijing-based firm.

The extra budget has been approved by its regional headquarters in Asean, said Jeerawut Wongpimonporn, country general manager for Lenovo Thailand.

About $2-3 million will be used to develop Lenovo's distribution channels and improve marketing and management with the aim of broadening its consumer PC market.

The rest will be spent on a major facelift of its office and construction of a demonstration centre for its new technology-leading servers.

Lenovo recently paid $2.1 billion to buy IBM's server business, which will be managed under Lenovo's enterprise business group.

"We intend to become a leader in the local PC market in the near future, up from No.3 with a 14% share now," Mr Jeerawut said.

Lenovo is the clear global leader in the PC market with a 20% share, overtaking California-based Hewlett-Packard.

Lenovo jumped into the global PC market in 2005 after acquiring IBM's PC business.

In Thailand, Lenovo has three units: PCs, mobiles and servers. Mr Jeerawut said the company planned to set up a new unit for cloud computing and ecosystems after establishing one in China.

Since its inception in Thailand nine years ago, Lenovo Thailand has witnessed a tenfold growth in businesses, with revenue increasing from $7-10 million in 2005 to $100 million expected this year.

Koh Kong Meng, vice-president and general manager of Lenovo Asean, said the acquisition of the server business was part of the group's strategy to maintain its strong share in the PC market and pursue growth in smartphones and tablets.

The server business in Southeast Asia was worth $980 million last year, with average annual growth of 2%. However, the global PC market has contracted by 5-10% in recent years.

"We intend to become a global leader in servers in the near future," Mr Meng said.

Mr Jeerawut said Lenovo expected revenue growth of almost 10% in Thailand this year, outpacing the flat growth of the country's overall PC market.
