Thailand, Russia to double trade by '16

Thailand and Russia have pledged to double the value of bilateral trade to US$10 billion within two years.

The agreement came during a meeting between Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev in Nay Pyi Taw late Wednesday.

After the meeting, government spokesman Yongyuth Maiyalarp said both leaders agreed to double the annual value of their mutual trade to $10 billion by 2016 and praised Thai-Russian relations, which will celebrate their 120th anniversary in 2017.

Gen Prayut thanked Russia for importing more Thai food and farm products, especially vegetables, fruits and canned food. He said he hoped Russia will increase imports to double the value of mutual trade.

He also invited Russia to help develop infrastructures and logistics in Thailand while assuring the Russian leader Thailand was a safe tourist destination that was taking good care of visitors.

Mr Yongyuth quoted the Russian prime minister as saying that Thailand was a popular destination for Russian tourists and his country was ready to boost energy, tourism and cultural cooperation with Thailand.

He also agreed to open Russian markets to increasingly welcome Thai farm products. He invited Gen Prayut to visit Russia.
