Civil servants set for pay rise

The government has set aside 16.8 billion baht for extra salary rises for state officials, in an attempt to bridge the salary gap between public and private sectors and better reflect the cost of living.

The Office of the Civil Service Commission will tomorrow seek cabinet approval for the pay rise, said a Finance Ministry source who declined to be named.

The salary hike for civil servants is one of the priorities of the National Council for Peace and Order to relieve the financial difficulties of low-paid officials in particular and discourage them from taking bribes.

Low-ranking officials' monthly allowance will be increased to 2,000 baht from 1,500 at present. Those who earn more than 12,285 baht a month in salary plus a monthly allowance will get an additional 500-1,000 baht, but the total must not exceed 13,285 baht a month.

The pay rise has been retroactively dated to Oct 1.

Middle-ranking officials who have no position allowance or are below C7 civil servants will get a 4% salary rise. The government will widen the ceiling salary to those who already earn the maximum salary for that position by 10%.

Around 1.98 million civil servants will enjoy the pay rise, effective next April.
