Businesses get together

A business-matching event aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam was held in Bangkok yesterday.

The event was held at the Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration at Chulalongkorn University and organised with the collaboration of the governments.

Madhurjya Kumar Dutta, a programme manager for trade facilitation at the Mekong Institute intergovernmental organisation, said the event was supported by the New Zealand government's international aid and development programme.

It allowed 23 business clusters to exchange information while traders from several countries including Thailand and Japan met goods producers.

"Big retailers such as Big C Supercenter and Mega Home were also invited to see them," said Mr Dutta.

He said the programme was an opportunity for SMEs in Asean to expand their client bases.

Takamasa Fujioka, executive director of the Sasin Japan Center, said the first time Sasin had coordinated a business-matching event was in March when it hooked up Thai SMEs and Japanese investors interested in investing in the Greater Mekong Subregion.

Mr Dutta said the aim was to support SMEs in finding markets and developing technology and products.
