B10bn data centres win BoI approval

B10bn data centres win BoI approval

The Board of Investment (BoI) has approved investment privileges for three data centres worth more than 10 billion baht, says acting secretary-general Hirunya Suchinai.

The approvals support the government's digital economy policy, which aims to turn Thailand into Asean's trade hub through advanced information technology.

Bangkok-based T.C.C. Technology, owned by billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, will invest in a data centre costing 3 billion baht.

Digital Port Asia of Japan will invest 1.15 billion baht in a data centre, while American company SuperNAP International S.A. will invest 6 billion in its project.

"Asian countries including Thailand are attractive for investors in line with the emerging trend of data development in the region compared with developed countries that have smaller room for development," said Ms Hirunya.

"These companies plan to invest in data centres here because Thailand is likely to be the centre of the region on the back of our current infrastructure as well as government projects that will commence next year,"  she said.

The BoI has this year received applications for investment privileges for projects worth 650 billion baht. Ms Hirunya expects applications to reach 800 billion baht for the whole year.

Despite only three weeks remaining this year, she is confident of the late surge because of the BoI's new investment policy that will be announced on Monday and the restored confidence among foreign investors after the government led by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha fully supported investment here.

"After the government has given a lot of effort to win their confidence, we can see significant improvement in sentiment among foreign investors, while the political situation is no longer a concern, at least in the short term," said Ms Hirunya.

The BoI will stage roadshows to promote its new investment strategy to potential investors. The first one will be held in Japan in the first quarter of 2015.

"As Japan is the largest foreign investor in Thailand, we will start there," said Ms Hirunya.
