Thai internet adoption reaches ‘critical mass’

Google seeks to cash in with bigger office

Thailand's internet industry is bracing itself for what could be a "critical turning point" for one of the world's fastest-growing connected world, says Google Thailand.

Google Thailand executives Ms Pornthip and Mr Ariya vow to strengthen the company’s services for Thai customers.

Given that two-thirds of the country's population access the internet via mobiles plus the exploding internet usage, the internet adoption has reached critical mass in Thailand, said Ariya Banomyong, country head of Google Thailand.

The government's digital economy initiative is also further encouraging the take-up of the local internet industry in 2015, he said.

"We believe the internet industry in Thailand is right at the start of an 'unpredictable sharp growth curve' for transformational use of web-based communication technologies next year," said Mr Ariya.

"The number of Google searches in Thailand grew three times this year."

He said the digital economy could act as a significant economic driver for Thailand next year.

To ride this potential curve, Google yesterday opened the doors of its swanky new Thai office, three years after operating from a small office here.

Located in the Park Ventures building on Wireless Road, the 1,100-square metres facility has elegant Thai decor and comes equipped with modern office automation, a cafe serving free nutritious meals and snacks, minibar, micro kitchens, fitness centre and gym and Thai massage corners.

"The establishment of the Bangkok office marks another step for Google in demonstrating its commitment to Thailand," said Mr Ariya, adding that it would also ensure Thai users, customers and partners get the most out of the company's platform and services.

Mr Ariya said to develop a digital economy, delivery of effective digital literacy for the educational and small and medium-sized enterprise sectors as well as digital creativity must be encouraged.

Pornthip Kongchun, marketing head of Google Thailand, said the company would continue to strengthen its products and service quality by offering more localised products.

The top five Google products in Thailand are the search engine, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Play and Google Chrome.

"Our mission is to facilitate access to information for the entire world in every language," said Ms Pornthip.

Google has offices in more than 60 countries and territories including five in Southeast Asia. It handles more than 100 billion searches per month globally.
