Crackdown on sites that insult royals

The government has vowed to close all websites found to have featured lese majeste content by tomorrow, aided by the state's revamped operating systems.

Shutting down a site that commits lese majeste could take just 30 seconds with the improved technology, said Takorn Tantasith, secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).

The regulator can transfer the offending URL (uniform resource locator, a site's web address) to government control.

The NBTC and chiefs of the Royal Thai Police held a meeting yesterday with internet service providers on how to eliminate websites that violate Section 112 of constitutional law.

There was no representative from Facebook, but Mr Takorn said the company had committed to complying with the measures.

The meeting targeted all web pages and social networking sites.

Under the new measures, local ISPs have been ordered to investigate content under their operations and shut down websites found to have presented lese majeste content.

ISPs can report irregularities in websites to the NBTC through www.report.nbtc@gmail.com.

Some 15 international internet gateways are operated by state enterprises and private companies that obtained licences from the NBTC.
