Upper NE gets B11bn in investment

The Board of Investment approved more than 11 billion baht for projects in upper northeastern provinces in 2014, with Khon Kaen attracting the largest interest at almost three billion baht.

Ratanawimon Naree Sukreekhet, director of the BoI region 3, said the investment-promotion agency approved 49 projects with an investment value of 11.03 billion baht last year.

The top three provinces with most investment are Khon Kaen, with 20 projects worth 2.99 billion baht; Kalasin with four projects worth 2.25 billion baht; and Mukdahan with five projects worth 2.13 billion baht.

Only Nakhon Panom, Nong Bua Lam Phu and Bung Kan saw no projects approved for investment privilege in 2014.

Farm and agro-industrial industries were the sectors attracting the greatest amount of investment.

Ms Ratanawimon said applicants for the investment privilege in 2015 had to study in details new regulations that had become effective in January under the new investment's strategy that aimed to adjust to the Asean Economic Community.

She said upper northeastern provinces were still attractive for both local and foreign investors.

For the overall investment in Thailand in 2014, the BoI approved projects worth combined around 700 billion baht.
