TMB boss wins CEO award

Despite the economy's bumpy ride last year, TMB Bank under the leadership of Boontuck Wangcharoen managed o deliver a strong profit.

TMB's net profit rose by 66.2% to 9.54 billion baht from the 2013 figure of 5.74 billion, itself a 257% increase from 2012.

Boontuck: Turned around ailing bank

The solid net profit has been just one of Mr Boontuck's successes.

He took the helm of TMB in July 2008 and that same year turned around the loss-making bank, which saw its first net profit since the 1997 crisis.

TMB ultimately wrote off 102 billion baht worth of retained losses in 2010 and resumed dividend payments.

Moreover, Mr Boontuck has succeeded in changing TMB's image as a bank that served military to a commercial bank with a focus on transactional banking under the slogan "Make the Difference".

And now Mr Boontuck, 58, has won the Best CEO for Financial Institutions Award for 2014 from the Investment Analysts Association (IAA).

Other Best CEO Awards went to Thai Union Frozen Products' Thiraphong Chansiri, Pruksa Real Estate's Thongma Vijitpongpun, Asia Property Development's Anupong Asavabhokhin, PTT Exploration and Production's Tevin Vongvanich, Siam Makro's Suchada Ithijarukul, Thaicom's Suphajee Suthumpun, Energy Absolute's Sompoch Ahunai and PTT Global Chemical former president and chief executive Bowon Vongsinudom.

Winners of the IAA's Best CFO Awards for 2014 are Quality Houses senior executive vice-president Suwanna Buddhaprasart, Charoen Pokphand Foods chief financial officer Paisan Chirakitcharern, Kasikornbank senior executive vice-president Kattiya Indaravijaya, Siam Commercial Bank senior executive vice-president Deepak Sarup, PTT Exploration and Production executive vice-president Penchan Jarikasem, PTT Global Chemical executive vice-president Patiphan Sukhonthaman, Advanced Info Service chief financial officer Pong-amorn Nimpoonsawat, Home Product Center senior vice-president Wannee Juntamongkol and Energy Absolute chief financial officer Amorn Sapthaweekul.

TMB shares closed yesterday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 3.02 baht, down two satang, in trade worth 131 million baht.
