Tesco affirms commitment to expansion in Thailand

Tesco Lotus remains committed to Thailand and will continue to invest in expanding its retail and online channels, according to chief executive officer John Christie.

The company will open five large stores and 50 express stores over the coming year, he said.

It also plans to increase investment in programmes to help reduce the prices of fresh food, groceries and household items to help consumers struggling with rising living costs.

Mr Christie said Tesco Lotus had so far invested over 4 billion baht under its Roll Back price campaign to help cut product prices, and had invested another 600 million baht to help slash the price of fresh food.

"Tesco Lotus has made huge investments over the years to help Thais save on their cost of living," he said.

"We are confident that our investment plan will strengthen our leadership in the modern retail sector, while we continue to work with Thai suppliers and business partners to grow together with us and help Thai people cut the cost of living."

Tesco Lotus recently completed a new 2.5-billion-baht distribution centre in Surat Thani to serve customers in southern provinces. The company operates nearly 1,800 stores across the country.

The company has expanded its digital offerings, with over 20,000 food and grocery products available through its Tesco Shop Online service, and another 5,000 products offered through Lazada, the regional e-commerce portal.

"Thailand is a strategic market for the Tesco Group. Growth opportunities here remain promising and we will continue to invest to grow our business," Mr Christie said.
