Consumer confidence drops again

Consumer confidence fell for a fourth straight month in April, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said on Thursday.

The confidence index in April was 76.6 points, a drop from 77.7 in March, the university said.

The falling index was due to the export slump and declining domestic purchasing power, it said, adding it reflected a worrying outlook for both the Thai and global economy.

Confidence could rebound in the second half of this year, stimulated by more public investment from government projects.

The university projected economic growth at 3.2% this year and inflation at 0.5%.

The index was compiled from a survey by the UTCC's centre for economic and business forecasting.
