Prasarn nixes state role rumours

Bank of Thailand governor Prasarn Trairatvorakul has brushed aside speculation he was approached to be in charge of overseeing economic policy in the government.

Mr Prasarn, whose tenure expires on Sept 30, said he had not been approached by anyone to be a cabinet member, adding that current officials should be given encouragement since they were experiencing difficulties internally and externally.

"I've just read that news, but I don't know who wrote it," he said.

"No one has approached me yet about a position."

It has been widely speculated that once Mr Prasarn's term ends, he will take the seat of deputy prime minister overseeing economic affairs, the current position of MR Pridiyathorn Devakula.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was non-committal about the reports. He told reporters on Thursday that a cabinet "reshuffle decision belongs to the cabinet".

The strengths and flaws of the ministers will be discussed by the cabinet before a final decision is made, he said.

The prime minister also said that to solve the country's problems efficiently, teamwork is necessary. The country's development requires cooperation from the government and the public sector.

Reports that MR Pridiyathorn would soon be replaced have been circulating in political circles for at least two months.

He insisted MR Pridiyathorn would stay put because the country's economic recovery is now on track.

"Only the export sector is yet to improve due to the economic slowdown of our trade partners," the prime minister said.

"Other economic indicators show better performance."

He said the government must seek more new markets to raise exports and amend existing laws and regulations to bolster border trade.

"I used to consult Mr Prasarn about economic policy, and he reassured me the economic development platform being conducted led by MR Pridiyathorn's team was moving in the right direction," Gen Prayut said.

Regarding his successor, Mr Prasarn said the list of potential candidates vying for the position seems decent and skilful.

The selection process is expected to be completed by next month.

Paiboon Kittisrikangwan, deputy governor overseeing corporate support services and banknote management, and Tongurai Limpiti, deputy governor responsible for financial institutions' stability, are both confirmed to have applied to be the 23rd governor of the central bank, a Finance Ministry source said.

Veerathai Santiprabhob, a member of the Bank of Thailand's board and the Monetary Policy Committee and an adviser to the Thailand Development Research Institute, is also aiming for the post.

The two other candidates are Supavud Saicheua, managing director of Phatra Securities, and Kiatchai Sophastienphong, former director of monetary policy at the central bank.

The period for applications closed last Wednesday, and a selection committee chaired by former Stock Exchange of Thailand chairman Sompol Kiatphaibool will select at least two qualifying candidates and forward their names to Finance Minister Sommai Phasee for consideration.

After deliberation, Mr Sommai will then pick one name and submit it for final cabinet approval.

The new governor is scheduled to be officially appointed to a four-year term no later than July 2.
