Pimol Srivikorn, a leading businessman and politician, is bringing the British modern classic scooter Scomadi to Thailand.

Scomadi Thailand has been given exclusive rights by Scomadi Ltd in Britain to distribute its scooters in Southeast Asia except Singapore and Malaysia for five years with another five-year renewal option.

"I love motorcycles and used to ride a big bike during my youth. I'm interested in scooters and Scomadi is an interesting brand that has a lot of fans," he said.

Scomadi Thailand has launched its website and received 300 bookings for its vintage-style scooters in just 10 days.

Mr Pimol, who is chairman of Thailand Carpet Manufacturing Plc, said the high sales were beyond his expectations.

The company will import Scomadi scooters from a production plant in China. They are priced from 97,000 baht in two models — the 50cc Leggera TL50 and the 125cc TL125.

Scomadi Ltd is a partnership between Frank Sanderson of Scooter Innovation Ltd and Paul Melici of PM Tuning Ltd, who have more than 60 years of experience in the scooter industry and have innovated the Scomadi brand based on iconic Italian scooters.

In Thailand, the first showroom on Bangkok's New Phetchaburi Road is expected to open next month. About 30 companies are negotiating to become Scomadi dealers.

He said he had been to the Philippines and would appoint the first Scomadi dealer there soon.

"After the Philippines, I will go to Indonesia, Vietnam and Laos. When Asean becomes a single market this year, there will be more demand for scooters in the coming years," he said.

Scomadi Thailand has set its sales target for 1,000 units in Thailand and another 1,000 units for the other markets in Southeast Asia in the next 12 months. Mr Pimol is confident the target will be achieved, particularly in Thailand, where feedback is positive.

"If we can exceed the high sales target for three years, we can ask permission from the brand owner to set up a production plant in Thailand to serve this region," he added.

The company has the rights to produce other accessories such as helmets and jackets.
